Transit On-time Performance
About the measure
On-time performance measures the percent of trips which are within a given threshold of scheduled time. Metro Transit’s and MnDOT’s on-time performance target is for 90% of trips to be within one minute early to four minutes late of scheduled times. MnDOT’s on-time performance target for Greater Minnesota’s transit systems is for 90% of trips to be within 45 minutes of scheduled times.
Where we want to go
Through its public transit providers, MnDOT is committed to providing multimodal transportation options. Access to safe and timely transit is a key piece of the multimodal transportation network. To enhance on-time performance, Metro Transit and local partners are expanding the use of bus lanes, signal technology, and other tactics to improve transit speed and reliability across the region. Many of these improvements are being advanced as Metro Transit opens more BRT lines. By 2030, a planned 165-mile bus rapid transit network of 12 lines will use strategies like in-lane stops, fare pre-payment, all-door boarding, transit signal priority, and bus lanes to offer fast, frequent, all-day service to many communities in the Twin Cities region. The Better Bus Route program aims to improve local bus routes not identified for near-term BRT investments. The approach is to implement quick, low-cost improvements like stop spacing and placement, route simplification, and extending no-parking zones near bus stops to make a noticeable difference in customer experience.
Greater Minnesota's 34 public transit systems and 5 tribal transit systems are operated by local governments, joint powers organizations, nonprofits, and tribal governments, serving all 80 counties outside the Twin Cities. MnDOT supports these systems through planning, research, technical assistance, and management of state and federal transit funding. MnDOT's first priority is to continue financial assistance to systems that meet the performance standards. Secondary priorities include expanding transit service to new areas and improving frequency, coverage, and daily duration of service currently provided.
