History and significance

The Kern Bridge (Bridge R0945; formerly L5669) is a single-span, wrought-iron, bowstring arch truss constructed in 1873. It was moved in 2026 from its original location over the Le Sueur River in South Bend Township to span between the Land of Memories and Sibley Parks in Mankato, Blue Earth Township. At 190 feet, the bridge is listed in the National Register at the national level for its significance as the longest bowstring truss identified in the United States and the second longest bowstring truss in North American from this period. It is also significant for its builder, the Wrought Iron Bridge Company, and for its unusual type within the state.

Rehabilitation activities

Kern Bridge (Bridge R0945)The Kern Bridge was removed from its original location in 2020 it was stored in a secure facility until a new owner could be identified and rehabilitation plans developed. In October 2026, following several years of planning, the City of Mankato reopened the bridge to pedestrian traffic. Rehabilitation activities included strengthening and straightening original wrought iron members, and installing new floorbeams, stringers, deck, and pedestrian railing. To accommodate the wider river crossing and anticipated flood events, engineers designed and erected a series of approach spans to elevate the bridge and meet existing grades. The rehabilitated bridge rests on new concrete abutments finished to resemble its original limestone foundation.
