Planned for 2026 west of Milan:
Project location: Highway 40, from Highway 119 west of Milan to 0.1 miles west of Fifth Street in Milan.
Project summary: Crews will resurface the existing pavement and repair culverts with new linings. In addition, some cattle passes along the corridor will be filled and closed.
Why it matters: These upgrades will extend the life of the pavement and culverts, and provide a smoother driving surface.
Traffic impact: To make room for construction work, motorists will experience temporary lane closures and can expect minor delays. There will be no detour.

Slow down and watch for crews working on rumble strips and striping.
Planned for 2027 east of Milan:
In 2027, MnDOT will resurface Highway 40 from Highway 59 to County Road 4/277, east of Milan. The project will also include culvert and storm sewer replacements along with guardrail work.
There will be two separate detours during construction:
Detour 1 (approximately 1 week)
This short detour will be used for culvert work/replacement within city limits near Highway 59/7. Traffic will use Highway 59 and Main Street.

Detour 2 (approximately 7-8 weeks)
This detour will be in place during the resurfacing work, culvert work, as well as guardrail and storm sewer replacements. Traffic will use Highway 59, County Road 13, and County Road 4/277.
