Traffic impacts

Highway 52 detour on Aug. 4

Highway 52 detour planned planned from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 while construction crews set the final bridge beams on the westbound I-90 bridge over Highway 52. Detours:

  • Southbound Highway 52: Travel to I-90 and take the eastbound I-90 exit (Exit 46) onto the flyover ramp. Travel east on I-90 to Exit 224 (Eyota) and travel south on Olmsted County Road 7 to connect with Highway 52 north of Chatfield. Motorists who use the flyover ramp to travel east on I-90 will not have any change during the beam setting.
  • Northbound Highway 52: Motorists should take Olmsted Co Rd 7 north to the westbound I-90 entrance ramp at Eyota, travel west to Exit 209A at Stewartville, then travel north on Highway 63 into Rochester to connect with Highway 52.

New flyover ramp open from southbound Highway 52 to eastbound I-90

Instead of making a left turn at grade in front of northbound Highway 52 traffic, motorists travel on the ramp that carries traffic over northbound Highway 52 to eastbound I-90.

  • Southbound Highway 52 traffic:
    • Going to eastbound I-90, take the right lane to go onto the ramp that curves over northbound Highway 52 and onto the eastbound I-90 on-ramp toward Eyota, St. Charles, Winona and La Crosse.
    • Continuing south on Highway 52, take the left lane, which will carry traffic under I-90 and continue south toward Marion, Chatfield and Preston.
  • Northbound Highway 52 traffic:
    • Going to eastbound I-90, take the right lane to the eastbound I-90 on-ramp. Watch as southbound Highway 52 traffic traveling to eastbound I-90 merges past the bridge.
    • Continuing north on Highway 52, take the left lane, which will be adjacent to the oncoming southbound traffic.

I-90 westbound to northbound Highway 52 exit detour for ramp construction

The detour for Exit 218 westbound I-90 to northbound Highway 52 is to travel 8 miles west to Exit 209A at Stewartville and travel north on Highway 63 into Rochester to connect with Highway 52. The detour is scheduled to be removed in late August.

I-90 lane closures, traffic changes at Highway 52

Westbound I-90 motorists at Highway 52 southeast of Rochester will experience lane closures and traffic changes beginning April 1 as the interchange construction project resumes its third and final year.

Beginning April 1:
• Westbound I-90 bridge closes until fall.
• Single-lane traffic for both directions of I-90 begins in the eastbound lanes.
• Westbound I-90 on-ramp closes.

Summary of work

I-90/Hwy 52 interchange project map

Construction is scheduled 2024-2026 to make changes to the I-90/Highway 52 interchange to improve safety and reduce delays.

  • 2024: Constructed temporary crossovers and begin new ramps and loops
  • 2025: Constructed new eastbound I-90 bridge, flyover bridge over Highway 52 and portion of new ramps and loop
  • 2026: Construct new westbound I-90 bridge and remaining portion of new ramps and loops

Improvements

A new feature, a flyover ramp, for southbound Highway 52 to eastbound I-90, will solve several problems:

New ramps will reduce the run-off-the-road crashes:

  • Changing the angles will allow for better, more controlled entrance/exit
  • Lengthened accelerations lanes will also improve conditions

The bridge replacements will allow for:

  • Relocation of the bridge piers that block the view of on-coming traffic
  • Improved bridges that will last another 60 years or more
