Study overview (PDF)

The initial study of this section of Highway 169 has been completed. Below are documents produced from this portion of the study.

Study Overview

MnDOT is studying the 8-mile segment of Highway 169 between Taconite and Pengilly. The study will evaluate existing conditions, analyze traffic, and screen potential improvement alternatives.

Since the 1980s, several studies, environmental documents, and transportation projects have been completed along Highway 169 through the Iron Range. During the past two decades, much of the corridor between Grand Rapids and Taconite has been reconstructed to increase capacity and modernize the roadway. The current study focuses on the section between Taconite and Pengilly to better understand existing and future transportation needs and help guide future improvements.

A full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was completed in 1989 for portions of the study corridor. Additional environmental documentation was prepared in the early 2000s to document transportation needs near, but not within, the current study area. Since then, federal requirements have changed and now require more extensive environmental review and a stronger assessment of transportation needs.

To meet federal funding requirements and better understand current and future transportation needs, MnDOT is conducting a comprehensive review of how Highway 169 functions today and how it may serve travelers in the future.

The study will:
  • Engage local partners, organizations, and community members to gather feedback about existing roadway issues and share study information
  • Document community characteristics, including land use and natural environmental features
  • Evaluate current and future traffic conditions, including congestion and safety concerns
  • Develop a long-term vision for the corridor based on community input and traffic analysis results
  • Identify potential improvement projects that support the corridor's needs and future vision

Study results will help MnDOT and local agencies plan future transportation improvements, address existing issues, and support long-term transportation needs along the corridor.
