Minnesota GO 50-Year Vision for Transportation

Minnesota GO Vision

The Minnesota GO Vision is a long-range transportation vision that guides how we plan for the various ways people and goods move around our state. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) leads this effort, and the vision is for all people and anyone with a role in implementing transportation.

MnDOT launched the Minnesota GO visioning process in 2011 to better align the transportation system with what Minnesotans expect for their quality of life, economy and natural environment. In 2026, MnDOT updated the vision to reflect changes in transportation needs, technology and policy direction in the intervening 15 years.

This 50-year vision for transportation will require collaboration between transportation stakeholders to be fully achieved. Although MnDOT initiated the effort to develop the vision, this is a vision for all forms of transportation, and ownership of the vision is a shared responsibility.

What is a vision?

A vision is a description of a desired future. It answers the question “what are we trying to achieve?” It does not answer the question “how will we do it?” – This will be addressed in subsequent statewide, modal and regional planning efforts.

Process used to develop the vision

The process for developing the vision included a wide range of engagement strategies with the public, stakeholders, topic area experts and agency partners. The project team conducted in-depth engagement with Minnesotans to determine their current transportation challenges and future transportation needs. Both online and in-person activities were implemented to reach people and provide flexibility for participation across the state.
