Traffic impacts
University Ave. and Fourth St. in Minneapolis project location map
All traffic impacts are tentative and weather dependent. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the project.
In late 2026, crews will be completing exploratory utility work throughout the project area to prepare for 2027 construction. Travelers may encounter temporary lane or ramp closures, shoulder closures, or short-term traffic shifts near active work areas. All work zones will be clearly signed and marked, and access will be maintained. Impacts are expected to be temporary and will move as work progresses throughout the project area.
Current
Lane closures
8 p.m. Tue, Oct. 20 through 6 a.m. Wed, Oct. 21

About this project
We are planning to reconstruct University Ave. Southeast and Fourth St. Southeast between Central Ave. and I-35W, including the University Ave. Southeast and Fourth St. Southeast bridges over I-35W in 2027 and 2028. The pavement needs repairs and the bridges must be raised to meet standards. The new design will improve conditions and transportation safety for all corridor users. This will include providing improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, bus stop improvements to correspond with the upcoming E Line Bus Rapid Transit route, and bike lane improvements.
Summary of work
- Reconstruct University Ave. Southeast and Fourth St. Southeast
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements to intersections and crossings
- Separate the bike lanes from vehicle traffic
- Integrate the bus stop facilities with the Metro Transit E Line bus rapid transit
- Other updates as identified through the project
