Household goods mover (moving companies)
Household goods movers are people or entities who move personal effects and property used or to be used by the owner in the owner's dwelling.

Steps to obtaining a household goods mover permit
- Register your business with the Minnesota Secretary of State (businesses domiciled outside of Minnesota are required to register with the Minnesota Secretary of State as a foreign entity).
- Apply for a USDOT number using the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website
- NOTE: There are two types of USDOT numbers -- intrastate and interstate. Intrastate means transporting within a state’s boundaries (no free is required). Interstate means transporting across a state boundary (a fee is required).
- Complete and submit the Household Goods Mover Permit Application Packet
- Have your insurance company submit a Form E and a Form H
- Before providing transportation, your insurance underwriter must file a Form E – “Uniform Motor Carrier Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Certificate of Insurance” and a Form H – “Uniform Motor Carrier Cargo Certificate of Insurance” with our office. The business name and address on the insurance form must match what is on your application form submitted to our office. The limits for public liability are:
- Not less than $100,000/$300,000 public liability (Form E)
- Not less than $50,000 destruction of property (Form E)
- Not less than $50,000 cargo insurance (Form H)
NOTE: You may not legally operate as a motor carrier until you receive your household goods mover permit.
