Building movers
A building mover is a person, corporation or other entity (private and for-hire motor carriers) who raises, supports off the foundation and moves buildings on or over public streets and highways. It does NOT include moving manufactured or modular homes, farmers moving their own farm buildings, or persons moving buildings less than 16 feet wide by 20 feet long.

Steps to obtaining a building mover license
- Register your business with the Minnesota Secretary of State (businesses domiciled outside of Minnesota are required to register with the Minnesota Secretary of State as a foreign entity).
- Apply for a USDOT number using the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website
- NOTE: There are two types of USDOT numbers -- intrastate and interstate. Intrastate means transporting within a state’s boundaries (no free is required). Interstate means transporting across a state boundary (a fee is required).
- Complete and submit the Building Mover License Application Packet
- Have your insurance company submit proof of insurance
- Before providing transportation, per Minnesota Statutes, section 221.81, subd. 3, your insurance underwriter must file certificates of insurance for both general liability and motor vehicle liability with our office. The business name and address on the insurance form must match what is on your application form submitted to our office. The limits for public liability are:
- Not less than $500,000 for general liability including completed operations, underground property damage, and collapse, for bodily injury or property damage
- Not less than $500,000 for motor vehicle liability for bodily injury or property damage
- Before providing transportation, per Minnesota Statutes, section 221.81, subd. 3, your insurance underwriter must file certificates of insurance for both general liability and motor vehicle liability with our office.
