Signal and Lighting Recertification

2026 recertification

We are currently redesigning the Signal and Lighting Recertification eLearning course, which is expected to be available in March 2027. Signal and Lighting Certifications expring on May 31, 2026, will be extended for one year. An updated certification card reflecting this change will be sent to you via email. If you did not receive a new card or would like to receive a printed copy of your certification card by mail, contact Kelly Franco.

MnDOT will offer a half-day “Signal and Lighting Certification: What’s New” training this spring. This session will cover updates and changes implemented over the past five years. Participation is strongly encouraged to stay informed about recent changes in signal and lighting construction, including the TS signal pole and updated anchor rod tightening information.

Description

This web-based eLearning coursecourse is to review and stay up to date on the latest changes in technology, components, contract documents, and construction procedures for MnDOT traffic control signals and lighting systems. The course is designed for those whose MnDOT Signal and Lighting certification is still valid but near expiration and allows them to maintain their certification for an additional 5 years. This is a web-based eLearning course with self-paced modules.

Each student will need to complete a 60 question test that requires a 70 percent score to be recertified. If you get between 60% and 69% on your first attempt at the exam, you will be allowed to take it one more time to achieve a 70%. If you get lower than 60% on the exam, you will have to re-register and take this course again in order to take the recertification again. eLearning is an asynchronous self-directed online class using the internet and a computer or tablet to complete the course work.

Audience

State, county, city, contractors and consultants whose signal and lighting certification is due for renewal.

Location

Web-based eLearning course

Cost

$250.00 recertification per person

Alternative Format

If students prefer an instructor led class, in-person signal and lighting certification classes will be scheduled in February and April 2026. Recertification students attending the certification class will be charged the recertification fee and will need to attend both days of the certification class.
